Colleagues from our Sheffield store have been spreading a little festive cheer – helping at a Christmas party for elderly people featuring a festive meal, musical entertainment and dancing.

Handsworth Foodbank received a £1,000 Asda Foundation grant to host the party, and community champion Carla Gillott and deputy store manager Sarah Cassinelli (pictured below) helped out on the day.

Carla, who volunteers regularly at the foodbank, will also be joining volunteers to deliver hampers to people who couldn't attend the party.

She said: "It was great, a really good event for elderly local people who are likely to be on their own at Christmas – so it was lovely to see to see them enjoying themselves.

"They had a three course Christmas meal and we had an entertainer there too singing old songs and festive classics. Some of them were even up dancing too!

"One of them enjoyed it so much she's going to call our general store manager Darren Maxwell to personally thank him."

The event was held at the Christian Life Centre.

Rosey Andrassy from the foodbank said: "Working together with Carla has enabled us to serve the local people of Handsworth by providing a community Christmas lunch or a Christmas hamper for the elderly, those who experience difficulty with mobility, and those who may not be surrounded by family and friends at Christmas."
