Experts say we waste up to half a glass of fizz per bottle. Almost 40% of Brits don’t know the correct way to pour a glass of bubbly. Asda appoints UK’s first ‘Afizzionado’ to combat the issue and help Brits perfect their ‘Prosecco pour’.
After warnings of a potential Prosecco shortage last year, we should be savouring every precious drop. However, experts from Asda predict that Brits will fritter away 1.5 million bottles of the nation’s favourite party drink this festive season, or nearly 9.5 million glasses, due to incorrect pouring methods. That’s enough to fill over 4,000 bath tubs or over 700 Santa sleighs!
Fizz faux pas are fuelling the woefully wasteful situation. Over 40% of Brits reveal that their Prosecco spills over the glass when they pour, with an additional 40% stating this spillage comes from committing the cardinal fizz sin of not knowing how to pour a glass properly.
For those aged 18-24, the main spillage culprit is when cutting shapes on the dance floor, with a quarter admitting they waste precious bubbles whilst having a boogie.
To combat bubble-based blunders this Christmas, Asda has appointed an ‘Afizzionado’ to help Brits perfect their ‘Prosecco pour.’ To ensure the nation isn’t losing a drop, Asda’s Afizzionado has written a handy guide with tips and tricks on protecting every bubble.
Alex Kennedy, Asda’s Afizzionado, comments: “At Asda, we want to help reduce those merry mishaps and celebratory spills to ensure not a single drop of festive fizz goes to waste.
“The average Brit wastes half a glass of Prosecco for every bottle, however with some simple fine-tuning to your pouring method, you’ll be better equipped to protect the fizz. For the dancers amongst us, I’d also recommend putting down the Prosecco before attempting to twerk – or stick to a box step to stop spills.”
Top tips from Alex on perfecting your ‘Prosecco Pour’:
· To open the bottle, hold at a 45-degree angle and loosen the cage around the cork (this should take six turns)
· After removing the cage, keep your thumb on top of the cork so that it doesn't fly out and overflow
· Twist the bottle, not the cork, and make sure you control it so it pops quietly, remember, you’re not in the Grand Prix
· Hold the glass at 45 degrees and slowly pour the delicious liquid down the side of the glass so that it doesn't hit the bottom too quickly
· Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and vibrations to avoid any surprise cork pops when opening
· When serving, ensure the fizz is ‘fridge cold’ – not frozen. Any freezing may cause the cork to explode or the glass to shatter
