Singing Asda Bexleyheath colleague Sid retires to record first album aged 79

July 23, 2020 10:13 AM

Good luck to our much-loved Bexleyheath colleague Sid Waite who's retiring at the age of 79 ... and heading straight into a studio to record an album!

Sid has entertained colleagues and customers over the years with his fabulous singing voice – raising thousands of pounds for Tickled Pink.

He said: "I'll miss everyone in store – customers and colleagues. I've had a brilliant time at Asda. I've loved every minute of it whether it be portering or on checkouts.

"I'm still going to do my shopping there and I'm going to continue with my singing for Tickled Pink too. Last year we raised £1,600 in four hours. The next one, all being well, will be on September 26."

Sid, who's married to Pamela, joined Asda 13 years ago after a career in the Army and banking and has been singing in pubs and clubs for more than 30 years. He even took part in The X Factor back in 2012.

Sid is recording his album with Ian Parker, keyboard player with The Hollies, using the studio at Ian's home.

He said: "We've recorded seven songs for the album so far, and we've got another eight to go. It's number one hits from the Sixties so I'm doing songs from artists such as Perry Como, Tom Jones and Cliff Richard."

Julie Wringe, the store's customer trading manager, said: "Sid is absolutely amazing – we all love him here. He will be sadly missed by everyone. We hope he has a fun retirement.

"We had a little do for him and made him a cake with a trolley on – he was very touched!

"Every September he's sung in store to raise money for Tickled Pink and he's raised a lot of money. He's sung for us at Christmas events and behind the checkouts too."
