Asda Newmains manager Gerry O'Reilly celebrates 35 years with Asda

Gerry's worked in various Asda stores over the years and is well-known for being a fount of knowledge who always goes out of his way to support his fellow colleagues and customers

He began his career with us by working part-time as a trolley assistant at the Cumbernauld store while completing his studies at university.

Gerry said: "I remember when I found out I got the job at Asda Cumbernauld all those years ago. I was so nervous but also excited to start something new. I really enjoyed working there and I was able to finish my degree at the same time, so it was brilliant."

Gerry stayed with us after completing his studies, working at our stores in Cumbernauld, Toryglen, Maryhill, Clydebank, Dunfermline St Leonard’s and Galashiels.

He said: “I worked in each store for around three years, learning different skills and working my way up which is testament to Asda as I had the opportunity to grow and develop throughout the company which I’m very grateful for.

“I remember when I was working as a young manager and we were just about to open the Toryglen store in 1997, that’s when I really started to develop my skills and know that I could have a good career at Asda. The Toryglen store ,anager at the time, John Murphy, was my mentor and he taught me everything I know; he’s a credit to Asda.

“I’ve also been able to visit lots of stores throughout my time here and I’ve met some amazing people along the way.

“My favourite part of the job is the friends you make on the journey. Every day is different, and we all go through challenges in life, but the people at Asda make it all worth it. I’ve made so many friends in my career who I now consider friends for life. Great colleagues make the job easier and the team we have at Asda is really special.”

Gerry has also played his part in fundraising and doing his bit to support the community.

He said: “One of my most cherished memories is when all of the regional store managers took part in a fundraising cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh around 15 years ago for a local children’s charity. We had so much fun that day and it really brought us together.”

Gerry was a manager at the Galashiels store from 2020 before he moved to the Newmains store as it was closer to home. During his time at Asda Galashiels, he led the way during the pandemic and made sure the team were supported throughout.

Ashley Simpson, online service colleague at Asda Galashiels, said: “Gerry steered the ship at Galashiels through the unprecedented times of Covid-19. He kept us all calm and united throughout. He is a genuine guy who is so knowledgeable but also great fun. It’s hard to sum up in words how good he is at his job. Thank you for everything, Gerry!”

Gerry is now settling into his new role as general store manager at Asda Newmains.

He said: “35 years ago, I started off as a trolley assistant and I’m so grateful that I was able to work my way up and I’m now looking forward to settling into my new role."

Asda Newmains colleague, Martina Stewart, said: “Gerry is such a lovely guy! He’s like a breath of fresh air and is so approachable and friendly. We are looking forward to working with him and know he’ll be a great asset to the store.”
