Lisa backs our toilet roll initiative as part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we are stepping up our support for the #getonaroll initiative by putting signs and symptoms of bowel cancer on all our own label toilet roll packaging.
We teamed up with Bowel Cancer UK to include the potentially life-saving information, together with a QR code for customers to find out more, on our own label popular Shades and Just Essential ranges. Shades is the number one own branded toilet paper in the UK and we sell more than 42 million packs a year to households across the UK– so the initiative has the potential to significantly improve awareness of signs and symptoms of bowel cancer.
It's got the full support of bakery colleague Lisa Farley from our Gosforth store, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2021.
She said: "I know mine was a different sort of cancer, but the message is still the same. It's so important to tell people what the signs of bowel cancer are and what they should do.
"I'm 100 per cent behind the toilet roll campaign. It's so important that people are given as much information as possible and see their GP if they are worried – it will save lives."
Doctors found a cancerous tumour and had it removed before Lisa started chemotherapy. She later had her bladder removed and now has a stoma. She has mad a great recovery, but has go to for a scan every six months.
Lisa, who's 49 and started at the store in 1994, said the Asda toilet roll campaign was "brilliant."
She said: "The more awareness we get out there on bowel cancer, bladder cancer and other cancers the better."
Bowel Cancer UK says someone dies of bowel cancer every 30 minutes in the UK, but their latest survey showed that nearly four in ten people in the UK cannot name a single symptom of bowel cancer .
That why they've launched their #KnowTheHigh5 campaign to raise awareness of the red flag symptoms of the disease.
During Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we have had some amazing volunteers from Bowel Cancer UK in many of our stores, including Wrexham and Pentwyn, collecting funds and giving out advice and information.
