Happy 102nd birthday to regular Asda Sheffield customer Alma

A very happy birthday to regular Asda customer Alma Taylor who turns 102 today and puts her secret to a long life down to her love of our Extra Special Aberdeen Angus steak pies and a glass of sherry.

Colleagues at our Sheffield Handsworth store arranged a little birthday treat for her, giving her a lovely bouquet of flowers, some gifts and a card as well as decorating an assisted trolley with balloons and banners and giving her a crown to wear as she did her shopping.

The store’s community champion Alison Canning said: "Alma's been visiting us for quite a number of years and when we found out about her birthday we wanted to do something special for her. She makes us all laugh every Tuesday when she comes in with her carer. She really is our queen.

"She was made up with her surprise. She was waving to everyone as she went round the store. When she got to the checkouts we got her a cake and half the store sang happy birthday to her, it was lovely. It proper made her day.

"You wouldn't think she was 102 – she looks great for her age. When we asked her what the secret for a long life was she said it was having an Asda Extra Special Aberdeen Angus pork pie and a sherry!"

Alma, who was born in Rotherham, married her late husband Ted in 1943. She has one son, Edward, who's 79, and two grandsons. During World War Two Alma drove cranes as part of the Land Army and afterwards had a number of jobs including working at Halifax Cotton Mill and being a school lollipop lady.

Happy birthday Alma, we hope you have a wonderful day.
