A very happy 104th customer to much-loved Asda Sheffield Handsworth customer Alma Taylor.

Ahead of her birthday on Sunday April 26 colleagues organised a surprise party for her, as well as decorating an assisted trolley with balloons and banners, singing Happy Birthday and getting her a bunch of flowers, a card and gifts including a cushion bearing photos of her late husband, Ted.

Asda Handsworth customer Alma celebrates 104th birthday

Alma – who shops in the store every week with her carer Leigh –says she loves our Extra Special Aberdeen Angus steak pies, Maris Piper potatoes and a glass of sherry!

Alison Canning, the store’s service team leader, said: "You wouldn't think Alma was 104 – she looks great for her age. She's amazing, unbelievable! She's been coming here for years and we all love her. She makes us laugh every time she comes in.

"She has the most infectious personality. She has a wicked sense of humour and likes a good joke, and loves a natter too. She is a true inspiration to us all.

"She's an adopted gran to us all and we refer to her as Queen of Asda and she will tell you that's her title."

Alma's son Edward, who's 81, said: "She thoroughly enjoys coming into the store. They really look after her and make her feel at home.”

Alma, who was born in Rotherham, married Ted in 1943. During World War Two she drove cranes as part of the Land Army and afterwards had a number of jobs including working at Halifax Cotton Mill and being a school lollipop lady.
