How customers are using Asda cakes as bases for personalised birthday centrepieces
Budget-savvy creators on TikTok are transforming cakes from Asda into unique professional-looking showstoppers and inspiring others to say things like "it'll be supermarket all the way from now on".
One big viral success has been Asda's Black Heart Cake – a rich chocolate sponge layered and covered with chocolate frosting that quickly became a hit with customers when it first launched last year.
TikTokers treat the Black Heart Cake like a canvas, decorating it with everything from colourful satin bows and ribbon trims to acrylic cake toppers and icing writing.
A new addition to the Asda celebration cake range, a Romantic Ribbons Bow Cake, is already proving popular on social media – and people on TikTok are coming up with ideas for adding finishing touches to personalise it for a special occasion.
TikToker turns the Black Heart Cake from Asda into her "dream birthday cake"
Gigi from Essex got half a million views on a TikTok showing the Asda Black Heart Cake she decorated for her 25th birthday.
She dressed up the cake with pink bows, edible glitter and a cake topper and said she was "so happy" with the result.
She told viewers: "My dream birthday cake cost me £15 from Asda and under £30 with all the bits that I added to it", and estimated that she saved £50 by doing it herself.
Some of the comments on her TikTok:
-
"These cakes are getting better don’t need a cake baker paying £140 a cake x"
-
"Love this ... I bought this cake basically is exactly the same for £100 for someone to make it. Thanks for sharing this."

"The leopard print birthday cake of my dreams"
TikTok content creator Kara with a K is a big fan of all things leopard print – and for her 36th birthday she turned the Black Heart Cake from Asda into what she called "the leopard print birthday cake of my dreams".
She posted this TikTok showing how she added cherries, ribbons and leopard print edible icing sheets around the cake as a border, and said it "turned out so much better than I could have hoped for".
Kara estimated that "If I was going to order this cake from someone local, it would be 50 plus quid."
Viewers said they'd be stealing Kara's idea for their own birthdays: "I’m 40 in October and having a party my theme is animal print, red, gold, and you’ve just inspired me to decorate my own cake, as iv been quoted £160 for a cake similar to this! So thank you and happy birthday 🥳"
It isn't the first time Kara's made a birthday centrepiece from an Asda cake – last year she transformed Asda's Chocolate Party Cake into an archaeology dig site for her son's 8th birthday party. She said: "I'll always utilise my creative skills for crazy birthday cake ideas…"
Other ways of decorating Asda's Black Heart Cake

She said: "Calling all goth girls and alt baddies! look at this gorgeous black heart cake from Asda for less than £15! I added a couple of decorations too! Social media drives surge in popularity of 1930s-style celebration cakes
The design of the Asda cakes – with piped frosting around the edges – is inspired by the vintage Lambeth cakes that have become one of the most in-demand types of celebration cake.
Lambeth cakes are a highly decorative style of cake known for their intricate royal icing or buttercream, layered to create a textured effect. The style is named after British cake decorator Joseph Lambeth, who popularised the look in the 1930s, and it's made a big comeback as vintage-inspired bakes have surged in popularity on social media.
Parents transform simple Asda cakes into unique themed birthday surprises for their kids
Parents are using all kinds of cakes from Asda to create customised birthday centrepieces featuring their children's favourite TV and film characters or other things they're passionate about.
@maliberriess turned Asda's Rose Cake into a teddy bear themed cake for her son's first birthday last year. She posted: "I have never in my life decorated a cake so this was all trial and error BUT tap myself on the back because I think it turned out pretty darnnnn good."
She said it was much cheaper than ordering from a professional baker: "The total cost of this cake with all decorations was about £25 ... ones I had quoted from bakers for similar final results were £50-70. Bargainnnn".
@mollieelizabeth4 transformed Asda's Mega Chocolate Celebration Cake into a Bluey-themed birthday cake for her daughter Lottie. She piped on her name with pink icing, added Smarties round the edge and finished it off with a Bluey cake topper and Bluey and Bingo figures on top.
Her TikTok description said: "When she wanted a chocolate @Bluey cake but you didn’t like any of the supermarket ones, and had a budget!!"
@laurenrebeccca also made a Bluey-themed cake for her son – decorating the Victoria Sponge Celebration Cake from Asda with toppers she bought on Etsy and character figures they already had at home.
Meanwhile @bethan_twinmum used two of Asda's Chocolate Party Cakes to make a dinosaur themed cake for each of her twin boys instead of paying over £100 for a custom-made cake.
And @little.lianne.smi turned an affordable Just Essentials by Asda Chocolate Cake into a drum cake for her son's 15th birthday – complete with fondant icing drumsticks and a drum kit cake topper.
She said: "I wasn’t about to spend loads of money or hours in the kitchen when it was essentially just a prop for the big day!"
People in the comments said the cake looked "really good", and she joked "I feel like this is going to be my new thing every birthday 😂".
