Once a week our Asda Fulwood community champion Nikki Young volunteers at the youth club she helped set up at Tanterton Village Centre.
The youth club is now in its fifth year and continues to go from strength to strength. The community centre was closed for many years but has been brought back to life with the help of the local community and volunteers like Nikki.
The volunteers fundraise to keep the centre running. As well as youth clubs, the centre is home to an over 55s lunch club on a Wednesday, a boxing club on Fridays and a holiday club for schoolchildren over the summer holidays.
Nikki was delighted to give the centre a grant of £900 from the Asda Foundation as part of our Healthy Holidays programme. This will pay for food for all the children attending the holiday club over the summer.
Nikki said: "The centre is in quite a deprived area and a lot of parents rely on schools to feed their children.
"As well as providing food the holiday club runs activities for the children. It has a pool table, ping pong and a giant screen so they can hold cinema nights.
"There are two people that run the kitchen there and do activities like "Make your own pizza" with the kids which are always popular!
"All the board of directors or trustees also volunteer in the centre. They are all hands on, helping out where they can."
