Our Peterlee store's community champion Sam regularly volunteers with the team at CAFE Together in Easington – she says they "just love helping people in our local community."

The cafe opens its doors at Easington Colliery Methodist Church every Thursday to provide hot meals and support to anyone who needs their help.

Its treasurer Bill Smithson said: "Everyone at Asda has been extremely helpful to us, particularly Sam and the store manager Duncan Hugill.

"They generally help any way they can, whether that's Sam joining us on Thursdays or with donations of food, which is great.

"We're a group of volunteers running a charity so we're totally reliant on donations.

"On Thursdays we feed around 35 people, and in the school holidays when the children come in we can feed more than 70.

"We're also running cookery classes and day trips to places like Alnwick Castle. We're quite an important facility locally as we give people the chance to do things they might not otherwise get the chance to do."

Sam said: "I've been volunteering with this group for three years and I really enjoy it. They're a great group. Everyone's so enthusiastic and there's a real community spirit there.

"We offer them help in any way we can, and recently I joined them to help cook some delicious meals for local people.

"There's always a great atmosphere among the volunteers who just love helping people in our local community."
