Community colleagues help charity throw fun party to beat the January blues

January can be a grey and lonely month for some people – so three of our wonderful community colleagues helped throw a fun party to bring together 100 elderly people living in south-west London.

Tracey Jacques from our Sutton store, Zoe Harper from Belvedere and Caroline Pettican from Charlton served food and drinks.

They also joined in as the guests danced the afternoon away at the special event, hosted by Friends in St Helier, a fantastic support group Tracey volunteers with.

Friends in St Helier run various events and services in the Morden area aiming to combat loneliness and isolation in the elderly, running regular lunch clubs, exercise sessions and support groups.

Charity organiser Nicola Buitrago, pictured below serving food to a guest, said: "January is a very grey month and this party gives them something to look forward to after Christmas. It's a way of getting everyone together at what can be a really bleak time of the year.

"They had something to eat, a bit of a dance and enjoyed the atmosphere, everyone had a marvellous time.

"Asda have been very helpful with donations and we're so grateful to the three colleagues who came along on the day, they were absolutely fantastic."

Guest Diane Lovett, who's 73, said: "It was smashing – everyone joined in together and got the chance to make some new friends.

"The volunteers did a wonderful job making everyone feel so welcome and I had a lovely, lovely time. January can be quite a long and dark month so it's such a great time for everyone to come together."

Tracey said: "Everyone had a fabulous time – the feedback was really positive and an event like this makes such a difference to many people's lives.

"The volunteers are such a great group of people – they're absolutely tremendous and worked so hard to make the day special. It's so rewarding to be involved in a community event like this."
