Asda Brighton Hollingbury colleagues Maria and Barbara with Salvation Army volunteers

Every week Maria Carpenter and Barbara Johnson from our Brighton Hollingbury store join the tireless volunteers from the Salvation Army to help cook food and provide clothing and support for homeless and vulnerable people.

For the last four years they've been helping prepare and serve breakfast and a two-course lunch at Brighton Congress Hall for between 60 and 80 people each Wednesday – and Salvation Army officer Mike Lloyd says he's really grateful for everything they do.

"Clearly they're great members of the Asda team and we also see them as great members of our team," said Mike. "I can't praise them highly enough.

"They've joined us every Wednesday morning for the last four years to muck in with us and do whatever's necessary; it's great.

"We open early and make a breakfast, then serve a two-course lunch at midday. We also provide clothing and showering facilities for between 60 and 80 people each week.

"They really help us out at Christmas as well, when we provide food parcels and gifts for families in need."

Maria said: "The volunteers do such a great job, and it's a pleasure for us to help them.

"We really enjoy volunteering there, we even go down when we're on holiday if we can. They do such important work that we're really proud to help however we can."
