Pre-school children try healthy fruits with our colleague Jon

Our wonderful community champions regularly work closely with teachers at their local schools and nurseries to promote healthy food and an active lifestyle – like Jon Coutts-Walker from our Long Eaton store, who ran a fun fruit testing session for pre-school children.

Jon regularly volunteers at Springfield Pre-School and, together with teaching assistants, encouraged the group of two-to-four-year-olds to taste fruits like pomegranates, lychees and passionfruit.

The session was based on the schools toolkit which our community champions use to help educate youngsters on the benefits of healthy eating and encourage them to try new fruits and vegetables.

Jon said: "One little girl called Amelia is my colleague Carol's granddaughter, and Carol said Amelia enjoyed the session so much she's asked her parents to buy pomegranates.

"I encouraged the children to try and taste all sorts of fruits I'd brought along from the store including passionfruit, coconut, lychees and physalis. Pomegranate was the most popular, it's quite sweet and went down well.

"The children were loving it and almost all of them tried everything! It went really well and I'm going back next month to help them try various vegetables.

"They're just a lovely bunch; I really enjoyed it, and my visit has definitely encouraged them to eat more fruit."
