April 06, 2018 08:49 AM

Happy 68th wedding anniversary to Betty and Maurice Curtis who've been shopping at our Weymouth store since it opened 30 years ago.

The store's community champion Jacqui Dixon surprised them with a bunch of flowers ahead of their big day this weekend.

She said: "I always look forward to seeing Betty and Maurice in the store, and love chatting to them. They always take time to stop and talk to me and other colleagues too.

"They're very well known in the town. Betty belongs to lots of groups and used to perform with the local operatic society. They are always very smartly dressed, and Betty loves to spend time looking through our George clothing.

"Maurice is very romantic – he always buys Betty red roses every Valentine's Day.

"They were surprised and delighted with the flowers, and everyone in the store wishes them a very happy anniversary."

Betty is 89 and Maurice is 88, and the couple have one son, Lee.

Maurice said: "Everyone in the store is so friendly, and Jacqui is lovely. She gives Betty a hug and a kiss when she sees her.

"We've been going in to the store once a week ever since it opened. We enjoy going – we particularly like the ginger jam, and the hot cross buns!"

Maurice met Betty when he was 15 and working at an ironmongers as an apprentice.

He said: "We used to go dancing at the old Sidney Hall, which is close to where the Asda Weymouth store now stands, so it's an important place for us."

The couple are celebrating their anniversary with a weekend in Torquay.
