Our Glenrothes store's community champion Avril Dullea spends every Friday volunteering with the wonderful team at her local foodbank – and they say she's become "a real friend to them".
Avril also set up a donation point for Glenrothes Foodbank in the store, as well as helping the volunteers secure much-needed donations.
The foodbank provides hot meals, food parcels, advice and support – and this Christmas Avril has been working with the foodbank's manager Jilly Guild to wrap presents to children of people using the service.
Glenrothes Foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust's network of 420 foodbanks across the UK. The Trusell Trust and FareShare are receiving £20 million from the Asda Fight Hunger Create Change programme over the next three years to support their work.
Avril said: "The volunteers are absolutely amazing. What they do for people in the community is unbelievable – it's really opened my eyes to the difficulties some people are facing.
"It's not just hot meals and food parcels, it's about being there for people so they have someone to talk to and they know they're not on their own.
"I help out in the kitchen, helping them provide hot meals, and I also help them make up the food parcels.
"They think of everything. They know that if someone comes into the foodbank and are struggling to feed their family, they're not going to be able to provide Christmas presents. So I helped them wrap presents which they'll be adding to the food parcels they'll be giving out over Christmas.
"Everyone at our store is also very generous when donating to the foodbank at the permanent collection point and I know all the volunteers are extremely grateful for these donations."
Jilly said: "Avril has become a real friend to the team here over the last few years. She does everything we ask her to and more – she's fantastic.
"We really value her time with us and also all of the donations that she brings to us from the store, particularly as we rely entirely on donations from the community to be able to help people.
"We like to give a present out with all of our food parcels at this time of year as we like to do anything we can to help people with the cost of Christmas."
