Scottish suppliers like Simon help our customers celebrate Burns Night in style

January 23, 2019 11:29 AM

Our Scottish buying team have been busy working with a range of local producers to source high quality food and drink ahead of Burns Night.

We pride ourselves on sourcing high quality goods from suppliers across Scotland – so in 2018 we introduced 130 new Scottish lines and so far this year we've already added a further 65.

Our stores in Scotland stock more than 1,000 products from more than 100 Scottish suppliers from the Borders to the Northern Isles – including delicious haggis from Scottish butcher Simon Howie, which is now available in Asda stores across the whole of the UK.

You can pick up Simon Howie Original Haggis in 386 of our stores and his Vegetarian Haggis – which has recently been fully vegan certified by the Vegan Society – in 365 stores across the country until 30th January.

The Perthshire-based butcher is one of the largest haggis makers in the country. He said: “We're overwhelmed at the success of our haggis lines in Asda stores over the years and are delighted to have now secured a national contract, which will allow people further afield to taste our delicious haggis this Burns Night.

“Burns Night was traditionally a Scottish celebration but now with haggis becoming increasingly more popular we’re seeing a high demand for it across the whole of the UK."

You can also find Simon Howie Gluten Free Haggis, Wee Haggis, Wee Veggie Haggis, Haggis Truffles, Haggis Bonbons and Chieftain Haggis in Asda stores across Scotland all year round.

Asda buying manager Heather Turnbull said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer Scotland’s national dish to more of our customers across the UK just in time for Burns Night. It’s all about offering customers great-tasting regional products at affordable prices – and having worked with Simon Howie for a few years now we know that’s exactly what we can guarantee with these haggis lines.

“We look forward to working with Simon Howie closely over Burns and hopefully we can grow our relationship in the future and go on to offer customers across the UK some more of their delicious Scottish produce.”

Asda's Head Innovation Chef Mark Richmond has created some delicious recipes to inspire customers in the run up to Burns Night, using some of the fantastic Scottish products available in store – including Simon's traditional haggis.

Our Extra Special Speyburn Single Malt Whisky Smoked Salmon makes a great appetiser for Burns Supper. The salmon is smoked in brick kilns for fifteen hours over oak and whisky barrel chips and hand-prepared with Speyburn Bradan Orach single malt Scotch Whisky. After being filleted, the salmon is cured with a careful balance of sea salt and Demerara sugar for an irresistibly fine flavour.

For the main event, Mark went for a traditional Scotch Beef paired with a delicious Wellington created using Simon Howie's Chieftain Haggis – plus the classic neeps and tatties.

And for dessert it had to be a traditional Tipsy Laird using Dean's Shortbread. Aberdeenshire-based shortbread and biscuit manufacturer Dean’s has grown to become a household name across Scotland in the last four decades, employing around 130 people and exporting its products to almost 30 markets around the world. The Whisky Marmalade Shortbread Biscuits are all-butter melt in the mouth shortbread rounds baked with zesty orange marmalade and a splash of whisky . They're perfect to enjoy with a whisky cocktail!

To finish, Mark created a delicious Scottish cheeseboard selection with Nairn Oatcakes. An iconic Edinburgh business, Nairn’s Oatcakes started out in 1896 in a village bakery in Strathaven, Lanarkshire. More than 120 years later it's grown from a cottage to large-scale production, with about 150 staff. Nairn’s use oats grown in the Scottish Borders where the climate is perfect for slowly and naturally ripening the grains.
