Asda cuts the cost of steaks in a bid to support UK farmers

Butcher's Selection Rump Steak

The supermarket announces lowest ever prices across its steak range as well as Low Prices Every Day across 1,000’s of everyday essentials.

As the nation navigates these challenging times and our spending and cooking habits evolve and adapt, there has been a significant decrease in the number of people buying more premium cuts of meat, resulting in knock-on implications for farmers.

In a bid to support UK farmers and the industry, Asda is investing in price, offering its lowest ever prices across its steak range, whilst continuing to pass-on the full value for farmers during this time of national crisis.

From this week, larger packs of Rump steaks and Sizzle steaks will be reduced by £1.00 from £4.50 to £5.50 and £5.00 to £4.00 respectively.

From 30th April Asda Butchers Selection steak will be reduced as follows:

  • 255G Rump Steak from £3.55 to £2.75 (saving of £0.80)
  • 227G Sirloin Steak from £3.55 to £2.85 (saving of £0.70)
  • 227G Ribeye Steak from £3.70 to £2.95 (saving of £0.75)
  • Fillet Steak from £30 to £26 per kg (saving of £4.00 per kg)

A rise in batch-cooking as people become more mindful of their spending, has meant the demand for affordable cuts of meat such as beef mince has increased by 50%. This trend for cheaper cuts, along with the closure of the food service and hospitality sector, is leaving farmers with an abundance of steak and a shortage of cheaper meat, causing an imbalance in the value of their livestock.

Paul Geary, Senior Buying Manager of Red Meat at Asda, comments: “During these challenging times, at Asda we’re committed to supporting both our customers and our suppliers. We recognise that buying habits are changing and customers are much more mindful of what they’re spending. We want to make sure our steaks are available an affordable price for people, whilst ensuring our farmers receive the support they need during the pandemic.”

Today, Asda has also announced its latest ‘Get Your Cook On’ campaign as the supermarket commits to providing ‘Low Prices Every Day’. Throughout May, prices of over a thousand essentials will be reduced, with these staying down for at least 26 weeks. This is across big branded favourites, including Cathedral City, Mature Cheddar Cheese 350g at £2.59 and for the first time, Asda own label products, including Butchers Selection Chicken Breast Fillets 650g at £3.40. With more customers cooking meals at home, Asda is keeping prices low to give customers peace of mind during these times of uncertainty.
