Nothing says ‘it’s summer’ like the first bite of a juicy strawberry. In the absence of everyone’s favourite tennis event of the year, Asda is encouraging the nation to support local suppliers and opt for delicious strawberries grown in Perthshire, renowned for its berries.
Asda has partnered with food producer Scotty Brand to provide customers with over 200 tonnes of naturally sweet strawberries – ensuring customers can taste the mouth-watering berries throughout over 200 stores nationwide.
Packed by Bruce Farms in Perthshire, the light, fertile soil, long summer days and mild nights provide the perfect conditions for growing sweet, juicy berries. The temperate conditions in Scotland lead the fruit to ripen at a slightly slower rate, producing the sweeter and juicier strawberries Brits love.
Bruce Farms and Scotty Brand were fortunate to have a vast amount of open space to adhere to during Covid-19, the necessary social distancing requirements during the picking and packaging process.
Liam Richards, Berry Technologist at Asda said:
“We’re always on the look-out for the best quality products to provide to our customers, and we’ve certainly secured the sweetest berry with these Scottish strawberries.
"We’re delighted that Asda can share Scotty Brand strawberries nationwide and continue to support produce farmers in the UK.”
Geoff Bruce, the director of Bruce Farms, said:
“We’ve been growing berries for 25 years and the growing conditions this year have been perfect.
"Strawberries take about 75 days to ripen in Scotland compared to about 60 days in England and about 45 days in Spain. This is all down to the Scottish weather and climate. The longer the ripening – the better the flavour.
"Scottish berries are a big hit both north and south of the border, so this year we are delighted that our Scotty Brand strawberries can be found in ASDA stores.”
Scotty Brand strawberries will be available in 300g punnets in 200 Asda stores throughout the UK from Sunday 7th June for £1.79.
