‘Whacky and Wonderful’ Christmas food and drink at Asda

December 2, 2024 08:00am

Amongst the ‘unusual’ line-up is a spiced white chocolate liqueur, Crème Brûlée flavoured cashew nuts, a mince pie and custard mash-up and a mulled wine sponge pudding.

Asda’s range of Christmas food and drink is fast hitting the shelves as we roll into December, but away from the traditional tastes of Christmas, Asda is offering shoppers unique and unusual treats over the festive season.

HOLIDAY HYBRIDS

As highlighted in Asda’s 2024/25 Trend Book. the rising ‘indulgent hybrid’ trend strikes the balance between familiarity and novelty - creating something interesting by combining foods in new formats.

For the sweet-toothed, Asda’s
Mulled Wine Sponge Pudding (£10), is a buttery baked spiced orange and mixed peel sponge, with an indulgent mulled wine sauce sachet as an interactive element for shoppers to add as they please.

The
Sherry Trifle Conserve (£2.20) contains red berries, Spanish sherry and Madagascan vanilla to create a custard flavour conserve. A classic dish, but in a spreadable form, it’s the perfect addition for the ultimate Christmas morning croissant.

Already causing a stir on social media and continuing to divide shoppers, is the
Roast Potato Mayo (£1.10). A light, creamy mayonnaise, with roast garlic, onion and rosemary which gives it its festive flavour, one customer says, “we could use this and make a Christmas dinner leftovers sandwich at teatime” and "sounds perfect in a ready salted crisp sandwich or with a stuffing sarnie”.

Bringing classic flavours to life through festive snacking, the
Crème Brûlée Flavour Cashews (£2.25) are coated with a layer of caramelised sugar and vanilla and Tikka Curry Flavour Peanuts (£1.50) are in a spicy and creamy tikka flavour coating.

CLASSICS – WITH A TWIST

Identified in Asda’s Trend Book as the ‘Pure Comfort’ trend, more and more customers are choosing comfort food for a source of joy. With a gourmet upgrade, ‘foodie’ shoppers are looking for ingredient upgrades and flavour twists.

The
Extra Special White Chocolate Spiced Cream Liqueur (£8) is a new take on a festive classic. With a spicy twist, this triple distilled wheat-based British vodka is blended with smooth Irish whiskey, Madagascan vanilla, aromatic clove, cassia and nutmeg and rich double cream. Shoppers are already enjoying this festive tipple available in store and online, with one review on Asda.co.uk saying, “smooth, whipped like cream with a sweet, white chocolate flavour and a winter spice twist - this is a perfect combination for me”.

For a mince pie with an (even more) indulgent element and combining two staple dessert components, Asda’s
Exceptional Mince Pie & Custard Tart (£5) combines custard and rich brandy mincemeat in an all-butter pastry case, finished with an oat streusel topping and a sweet dusting.

A flavoursome twist on the Christmas dinner essential, Asda can offer
Exceptional Pigs in Blankets Camembert Wreath (£6.50). The twist? It’s sold with a sachet of hot honey for decadent drizzling.

Rich Harding, Asda’s Senior Innovation Chef, says “The buttery, tangy flavour of camembert pairs particularly well with pigs in blankets. A snack synonymous with Christmas which packs a savoury, umami punch resulting in what we call a ‘flavour bomb’ – something that easily and instantly elevates a dish. The spiced honey that comes in a sachet for the customer to drizzle over the wreath of meat and melted cheese rounds everything off with a ‘swicy’ kick; a flavour mash-up that blurs the boundaries between sweet and savoury and engages our tastebuds.”

Asda’s festive range is available now instore and online.
