The humble cheeseboard encompasses a starter, main and dessert all-in-one, with 38% of Brits considering a cheese board a key part of festive celebrations*. And this Christmas, as Brits prepare to assemble their festive cheeseboards, Asda’s resident cheese expert, Matt Forde, shares his foolproof steps to creating an unforgettable spread.

His first tip? Take the hassle out with a premium, pre-prepared cheeseboard that offers brie-lliant variety and value. Available for just £5 for a limited time, Asda’s new Exceptional Speciality Cheeseboard (RRP: £10) contains four standout cheeses; an intense Swiss Gruyere, a complex full bodied XO Gouda, a rich and creamy P’tit Grey and a blue, mildly salty Blue d’Affinois. Serving 12, it works out at £2.50 per cheese, and 83p per serve.

As part of Asda’s Mega Event Price Drop weekend this Friday until Sunday (13
th – 15th December dates), customers can pick up the Exceptional Speciality Cheeseboard for just £5 by using a £5 coupon from the Asda Rewards loyalty app. The huge 50% saving results in each cheese working out at just £1.25 – a grate deal for cheese lovers preparing for Christmas.

Each cheese is expertly curated to provide shoppers with the finest combination of flavours. The Swiss Gruyère is full-bodied, offering a firm texture and a fruity, nutty richness, aged in cellars for a minimum of 10 months. The XO Gouda, while still full-bodied, is sure to delight with its sweet caramel undertones. The
P’tit Grey is both creamy and indulgently rich, while the Blue d’Affinois boasts a melt-in-the-mouth texture complemented by a perfectly salty aftertaste.

The Exceptional Speciality Cheeseboard feature four types of cheese – the perfect number to ensure there’s variety without too many opposing flavours. Matt advises that the perfect cheeseboard should only ever include three to five cheeses. Variety is key to a showstopping board, so cheese-fiends should opt for a mix of flavours and textures to includes

  1. A sharp, crumbly cheese (such as Asda’s Exceptional XO Gouda)

  2. A soft cheese (such as Asda’s Exceptional P’tit Grey)

  3. A firm, nutty hard cheese (such as Asda’s Swiss Gruyère)

  4. A blue cheese (such as Asda’s Blue d’Affinois)

  5. A ripe, oozy cheese

Although a cardinal sin to cheeseboard traditionalists, Matt recommends adding dried fruit, nuts, and chutneys to take cheeseboards to the next level, such as Asda’s Extra Special Nut Mix (£2.50).

When serving, Matt recommends leaving a cheeseboard out for at least an hour to allow the flavours to develop. Moreover, each cheese should be cut with a separate knife to ensure that a mild Cheddar doesn’t end up tasting like a tangy blue cheese.

Matt Forde, Product Development Manager for Cheese said: “Cheese is an iconic part of Christmas, however assembling a perfectly balanced board at home can be confusing, expensive and time-consuming. As a workaround, The Exceptional Speciality Cheeseboard features four standout cheeses, providing fantastic variety and value – especially with the upcoming 50% off deal just in time for the festive season.”
