GUARD-A THE GARDA - ROMAN GUARDS SPOTTED IN ASDA GUARDING THIS SUMMER’S NEWEST SPARKLING WINE
The latest addition to the Wine Atlas range, Garda Sparkling, launches this week at £6.97
Roman guards have been spotted in Asda this week, protecting one of the supermarket’s newest and most exciting launches: Wine Atlas Garda Sparkling (£6.97).
Dressed in full armour, the guards were seen stationed beside the fizz as customers flocked to get their hands on what is tipped to be the ‘new Prosecco’ of the summer.
The sparkling wine hails from the sun-drenched shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy, a region steeped in Roman history. Grapes have been cultivated there since the days of the Roman Empire, so Asda is honouring this ancient legacy by enlisting the legion of soldiers to *Guard-a the Garda*. And one helpful guard was even spotted helping a shopper to their car!
This crisp, refreshing sparkler is predicted to become a hot commodity as temperatures soar. Made using the Charmat method - the same process that gives Prosecco its signature bubbles - it’s crafted from the Garganega grape and bursts with juicy notes of white peach and mirabelle plum.
**James Yelland, Senior Manager for Wine Buying at Asda, said:** *“Now that the word is out, we knew Garda would turn heads. With flavour notes that pair perfectly with light summer feasts, a heritage steeped in sunshine and history, and a Silver Medal win at the International Wine Challenge 2025, we wanted to give every shopper a fair shot at a bottle. Then, all that’s left is to pop, pour, and enjoy your very own Roman Empire*.”
Described by the IWC judges as a *“delicate wine with white peach and blossom on the nose. Dry and pithy, with wonderful balance,”* Garda is best enjoyed chilled, either solo in the sunshine or paired with fish, white meats, or vibrant summer salads.
The new fizz is the latest addition to Asda’s Wine Atlas range, which is all about helping customers discover ‘lesser known’ grape varieties and hidden gems from around the world without leaving the supermarket aisle. Created in collaboration with expert growers and producers from a variety of renowned and emerging wine regions, the range offers expertly crafted, premium-quality wines at an affordable price.
Last month, Asda topped the Decanter World Wine Awards rankings with the most gold medals of any UK supermarket after also being revealed as the most awarded UK supermarket at the International Wine Challenge, winning 155 medals.
Wine Atlas Garda Sparkling is available in Asda stores and online now, RRP £6.97.
