Asda’s Expert Wine Buyer Reveals the Best Wines to Welcome Spring

Asda’s expert wine buyer, Clive Donaldson, shares his top wine suggestions for transitional spring tipples.

Asda is also offering its popular Buy 6 Save 25% on selected wines priced at £6 and above, available from Friday 20th March until Monday 6th April.

Asda is helping shoppers celebrate the arrival of spring with a curated selection of seasonal wines recommended by its Senior Manager for Wine Sourcing, Clive Donaldson.

With the spring equinox falling on Friday 20th March, marking the official start of the season, Asda is highlighting a range of lighter, fresher wines that perfectly complement springtime ingredients and meals.

According to Clive Donaldson, the transition from winter to spring is reflected not only in what we eat, but also in what we drink.

Clive says: “In spring the days lengthen, the sun starts to shine again, and early season produce such as asparagus, spring greens, purple-sprouting broccoli, lettuce and other green veg starts to appear on the supermarket shelves. With the warmer days we switch from hearty winter dishes to lighter dishes making the most of these fresh ingredients. More chicken and fish come back into our diet to match the spring vegetables. Spring lamb is a treat and often served as the centre piece at Easter.

“Our wine tastes change accordingly, away from rich warming wintry wines, to lighter more vibrant whites and rosés along with more medium-bodied reds that go well with lamb. Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect partner for new season asparagus and goes well with green veg dishes, whereas wines like Bordeaux Supérieur or Rioja Crianza or Reserva wines are perfect with lamb.”

Asda’s selection showcases transitional wines, styles that bridge the gap between winter’s fuller-bodied bottles and the lighter wines typically enjoyed in summer.

Asda is also offering its popular Buy 6 Save 25% on selected wines priced at £6 and above, which will be available from Friday 20th March until Monday 6th April, just in time for the Easter weekend.

Pale and Perfect for Spring Beautiful

For fresh seasonal vegetables and lighter dishes, crisp aromatic whites are ideal.

• Exceptional Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – A vibrant Sauvignon Blanc with herbaceous notes that pair beautifully with new-season asparagus, leeks in salads or spring quiches. Priced at £8.50.

• Exceptional Touraine Sauvignon Blanc – A more restrained Loire Valley style, offering nettle and gooseberry notes that complement broccoli, rocket, baby spinach and other green vegetables. This fresh white is priced at £8.

• Extra Special Rueda – A fresh leafy white with slightly more body than Sauvignon Blanc, making it perfect alongside chicken or salmon dishes. Priced at £7.50.

• Torre de Lapela Vinho Verde – Light, crisp and refreshing, an ideal thirst-quencher with seafood or spring salads. This is a great value wine priced at £5.50.

Crisp, Fresh Rosé

Rosés are synonymous with spring time, and pair delightfully with fresh green vegetables and fish dishes.

• Exceptional Côtes de Provence Rosé – A dry, crisp rosé that pairs perfectly with spring salads, particularly those with herby or garlicky Mediterranean dressings. This delightful bottle is priced at £9.

Cosy Reds for Those Cooler Spring Evenings

While warmer days call for lighter wines, spring evenings are still cool enough to enjoy elegant medium-bodied reds, especially with seasonal lamb.

• Exceptional Bordeaux Supérieur – A classic medium-bodied red and traditional partner for lamb. Perfectly priced at £7.75.

• Exceptional Marques Del Norte Rioja Reserva – This is a classic rioja reserva. Rich enough to complement slow-roast lamb or pork, while balanced enough not to overpower delicate spring flavours. Priced at £9.00.

• Exceptional Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon – A New World take on Bordeaux, packed with blackcurrant, black cherry and violet notes, with hints of eucalyptus, ideal with lamb chops or a garlic and anchovy studded leg of lamb. This wine is truly fantastic value at £7.50.
