Asda’s holiday hack could save thousands of brits time and money on their trip

Brits are wasting the first hours of their holiday pushing a supermarket trolley instead of relaxing, with new research from Asda revealing almost two thirds (72.6%) spend up to an hour shopping for groceries after arriving at their UK staycation destination.

The research also found almost three quarters (74%) spend more on groceries during a staycation than they would during a normal week at home, with one in three saying they've bought groceries there simply because they had no other option, while a further third (32%) said they end up spending more after forgetting essentials and having to buy them again.

And the journey to a UK staycation also causes Brits a headache, with four in five (80%) worrying about keeping food fresh on the journey, topping the concerns list is milk going off (45%), followed by frozen food defrosting (37%), meat getting too warm (32%), drinks not staying cold (32%) and ice cream melting (29%).

Now, as Britain is set for a bumper staycation summer, Asda is encouraging families to skip both the coolbox and the supermarket trolley by having their grocery shop delivered directly to their campsite, caravan park, holiday cottage or other holiday accommodation through its grocery home delivery service.

Available for the same cost as a standard home delivery slot, customers can order everything from breakfast essentials and BBQ favourites to frozen food, fresh meat, drinks and holiday treats to arrive when they do - meaning chilled and frozen products stay cold, cars are easier to pack, and holidays can start the moment they arrive.

The service is set to become a staycation essential, with seven in ten (70%) Brits saying they would use supermarket delivery direct to their holiday accommodation. The hack could also help families stretch their holiday budgets, with more than half (52%) believing holiday park shops are more expensive than supermarkets.

Asda's research also found that households typically spend between £75 and £149 on groceries during a week-long UK staycation, meaning avoiding expensive convenience purchases can make a noticeable difference to holiday budgets.

The hack is already gaining traction on social media, with holidaymakers hailing it as a 'genius' way to start their break. TikTok creator Nannabea shared her experience of having an Asda delivery brought directly to her caravan while holidaying in Blackpool, telling her 1.7 million followers: "Thank you @Asda UK, this is the way to do it, delivered to the caravan door."

The growing popularity of the hack comes as household budgets remain under pressure. According to Asda's latest Income Tracker, the average UK household had £261 per week left after paying bills and essentials in June, an increase of £9.88 compared to a year ago. However, many families continue to feel the squeeze as rising costs and economic uncertainty continue to shape holiday spending decisions.

For families travelling with children, dogs, camping equipment, bikes and luggage, finding room in the car for several days' worth of food and drink can be a challenge. Ordering groceries to arrive at a holiday destination means customers can travel lighter while avoiding an immediate supermarket trip on arrival. The service is also proving popular with travellers arriving by train, allowing them to head straight to their accommodation without carrying heavy shopping bags.

One Asda store seeing the trend first-hand is Asda Llangefni in Anglesey, where deliveries to holidaymakers can account for up to 40% of deliveries during the summer months.

Dewi Jones, Online Manager at Asda Llangefni, said: "More people are taking advantage of the service because they don't have to pack days' worth of food into the car or spend the first part of their holiday in the supermarket. They can arrive, unpack and start enjoying their break straight away.

"We deliver to holiday lets next to Harlech Castle and, as well as campsites, caravan parks and Airbnbs, we even deliver to people on boats at Holyhead Harbour. It's mostly pleasure boats and yachts, but we've even delivered to people getting on the ferry to Dublin!"

An Asda spokesperson said: "Summer holidays should start the moment you arrive, not with a supermarket trolley dash. More customers are discovering they can have everything they need delivered directly to their holiday destination, whether that's a campsite, caravan park, holiday cottage or even a boat.”

Customers can book deliveries to campsites, caravan parks, holiday cottages and other holiday accommodation in exactly the same way as they would for their home address by entering the destination postcode when placing an online grocery order and can include additional notes to help drivers locate them.
