IS IT 'ASDA', 'THE ASDA'... OR NOW, 'T'ASDA'? ASDA SETTLES BRITAIN'S FAVOURITE SUPERMARKET DEBATE FOR YORKSHIRE DAY

• It's official, for Yorkshire Day, Asda is becoming t'ASDA.

• The rebrand playfully taps into the nation's ongoing 'Asda' vs 'The Asda' debate, while paying tribute to the Yorkshire dialect that inspired the nickname.

• Customers will be treated to a true Yorkshire welcome, with complimentary white Yorkshire roses and colleagues embracing some of the county's best-loved sayings.

Asda is settling one of Britain's longest-running supermarket debates this Yorkshire Day, by officially renaming one of its stores t'Asda.

In a playful tribute to the retailer's Yorkshire heritage, the exterior signage at Asda's Barnsley store has been transformed into a giant t'Asda, celebrating the affectionate nickname that generations of Yorkshire customers have long used for the supermarket.

The move is a light-hearted nod to the enduring debate over whether Britain's shoppers should say they're going to ‘Asda’ or ‘The Asda’ - a conversation that continues to spark discussion across social media, around dinner tables and even in popular culture, most recently referenced by comedian Russell Kane.

Asda, however, believes Yorkshire has had the answer all along.

As the birthplace of Yorkshire puddings, proper brews, breathtaking countryside and famously straight-talking locals, Yorkshire Day is all about celebrating the traditions and personality that make the county unique. And for Asda, whose story started in 1949 in Knottingley, West Riding of Yorkshire, it's a chance to proudly celebrate the place it still calls home. The t'ASDA rebrand is a tribute to both the place where the business began, and the customers across the country who have referred to ‘The Asda’ or ‘t’Asda’ nickname for decades.

To mark the occasion, from 30th July to 1st August, customers visiting the store will be welcomed with a complimentary white Yorkshire rose, the county's iconic emblem, while Asda colleagues embrace the celebrations by greeting shoppers with some of their favourite Yorkshire sayings, expect plenty of "Ey up!", "Ta very much!" and "See thi later!"s.

An Asda spokesperson said: “Yorkshire has been part of Asda's story since day one, so Yorkshire Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the county and the people who have supported us for generations.

"The debate over whether it's 'Asda' or 'The Asda' has become a great British talking point, but in Yorkshire there's always been another way to say it. Renaming our Barnsley store t'ASDA is a fun tribute to our roots and a celebration of the community that has proudly called us that for years.

“In an age where headlines are increasingly filled with AI-generated images and digital stunts, we wanted to create something that people could experience for themselves, a real-life celebration that brings a smile to our customers and communities alike.

The giant sign was unveiled on Thursday 30th July and will remain in place until early September, giving customers plenty of opportunity to snap a picture with what could be Britain's most proudly Yorkshire supermarket.
