2023 Food Waste Data
We've been working hard in partnership with our suppliers, colleagues and our customers, to make a positive difference to our communities. That's why we think it's important that we share our food waste data publicly to allow others to understand our impact. Our approach for measuring food waste follows industry best practice using the Food Loss and Waste Accounting and Reporting Standards (FLW Standard) to accurately measure food waste coming from our stores, depots and home offices.
The % of food we bought but couldn’t sell to customers in 2023 was 0.6%. We donated or redistributed 12% of the food we couldn’t sell.
We have updated the food redistribution data for 2019–2023 to account for animal feed. The revised figures are lower than those reported previously for all years. We expect a similar impact on our animal feed redistribution in 2024*
In partnership with Fareshare, most of our stores can donate food that is no longer sellable, but still edible, to local charities who need it most. In 2023 Asda & Fareshare celebrated 10 years of Partnership. This partnership has supported redistributing enough surplus food to make over 30 million meals and supported 7588 charities with the surplus from our stores and depots. Any food that is no longer edible is sent for anaerobic digestion, which creates energy and the by-product called digestate is used as a fertilizer to be used on farms.
