Our Operational Carbon Footprint (Scope 1 and 2 emissions)

**Our aim is to be an end-to-end net-zero carbon emissions business**

Delivering net zero across our value chain is much more challenging because we have less direct control, and it requires managing much more data. We have a range of programmes underway:

  • Taking action to drive reductions in scope 3 emissions

  • Improving the quality of accounting

  • Collaborating with industry partners to resolve systemic challenges/barriers to delivering reductions

As these work streams develop, our transition plans will continue to be refined and the data underpinning our reporting will improve and change.

Roadmap to Net Zero

In 2021, we committed to achieving net-zero operations by 2040. To reach this goal, we’re focusing on reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and transitioning to renewable energy, while tracking progress and adjusting our approach as needed.

50% reduction by end of 2025 – Scopes 1 & 2

Since 2007, we’ve been committed to reducing our environmental impact. Using our 2015 emissions as a baseline, we’ve successfully cut our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 48% — a significant milestone in our journey toward a low-carbon future.

This progress has been driven by:

  • Transitioning our HGV fleet to biogas, reducing reliance on fossil fuels

  • Implementing low-carbon refrigeration technologies across our stores

  • Enhancing energy efficiency through smart systems and operational improvements

Data in the above table shows progress against our 2015 Scope 1 & 2 baseline and excludes the Asda Express acquisitions made in 2023. We’ve now reduced by 48% against our 2015 baseline, with our goal to reach 50% by the end of 2025. Full reporting of our carbon footprint including our acquisitions can be found in the scorecards at the end of this report.

We have calculated and reported our emissions in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting standard (revised edition) and emission factors from the UK Governments GHG Conversion factors company reporting 2020 and the Carbon Trust’s internal emission factor data base. The emissions are reported using the financial control approach. The calculations include data from 1st Jan-31st of December each year.

Bio-LNG Investment

In 2024 we invested in two new Bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas) refueling facilities. Working closely with Gasrec, the new facilities in Warrington and Dartford means Asda now has 13 fully operational bio-LNG stations strategically located around the UK. This has helped contribute to a 26% reduction in transport emissions in 2024
